Scenic Design for The Good Doctor by Neil Simon
Designed and constructed during the Applied Design and Technical Theatre class for the Horace Mann Theatre Department’s 2022 fall production, the scenic design for The Good Doctor fit in a small space while accommodating 19 actors on stage and providing dynamic space for various vignettes. The main feature of this design is a set of overlaying platforms. The play revolves around a lonely writer and his scattered memories, and the disorderly nature of the platforms represents the pieces of his life fusing to form the play itself.
Direction by Jonathan Nye, lighting design by Gael Singer, under technical direction by Caitie Miller.
Paint Concept
The Good Doctor is based on several stories from Anton Chehkov, a Russian writer, so the floor treatment for this design is loosely inspired by Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky’s abstract work. The restricted cool color palette serves to convey physical and emotional coldness, as the play’s theme of solitude, should evoke a cool feeling in the audience.
